The samples collected near the Princess Elisabeth Station during the BELARE 2009 campaign were distributed among several Belgian and European laboratories. Part of the samples collected by Dr Annick Wilmotte are studied at our lab, in the Center for Protein Engeneering of the University of Liege (Belgium). We use a polyphasic approach which includes a molecular study using 16S rRNA gene sequences, an isolation of cyanobacteria in culture and a microscopic observation of environmental samples and isolated cultures. In the slides below, we present some preliminary results of the study of cyanobacterial diversity and several other groups of microorganisms.
