The new BELDIVA expedition!

Dear all,

The BELDIVA-DELAQUA expedition for 2010 has left ! In Brussels Airport, Elie Verleyen (University of Gent) and Zorigto Namsaraev (University of Liège) took a flight in the evening of the 3^rd January.

They joined a party of 5 persons, including a very important figure, David the cook! From my experience, I can tell that they will have nice meals! Moreover, Irina Gorodetskaya, a meteorologist from the University of Leuven, also departed. Her supervisor, Nicole Van Lipzig was waiving her goodbye, before going herself to Utsteinen on the 26^th January. In addition, Wim Van Belle from Schneider, Luc Marot and Michael Durdu were going to work on the electronic installation of the Station.

In Frankfurt, they will be joined by the third BELDIVA member, Josef Elster (University of South Bohemia) and in Cape Town, Steve Roberts (British Antarctic Survey) will arrive directly from London. Then, the team of four will be complete and will wait in Cape Town for the flight to Troll and then, to Usteinen.

So, with this blog, we will try to keep you informed about the BELDIVA 2010 expedition, the activities and daily life of the four scientists involved. Cheers, Annick Wilmotte

Dear all,
This blog is about our scientific research in the frame of 3 expeditions to the Princess Elisabeth Station, the new Belgian Research Station, in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. The expeditions are financed by the Federal Science Policy Office for the project BELDIVA. The logistic support at the Station is ensured by the International Polar Foundation. Guides from the Belgian Army have also accompanied us during the field trips, as the photograph René Robert.
In addition, in 2013, one of us has been invited to participate to a expedition by INACH (Chile).
Who are we? Scientists, mostly from Belgian Universities and Institutions, and our international colleagues who are proposing their complementary expertises. We work together and a characteristics of the Antarctic research is its high level of international collaboration, as requested by the Antarctic Treaty (http://www.ats.aq/index_e.htm).
Because our teams are multilingual, the blog will also contain texts in different languages (presently English, Dutch, French, and maybe more in the future...). It is possible to have translations with Google. Hopefully, you will enjoy our chronicles, and do not hesitate to write comments and questions!

Deze blog betreft onze wetenschappelijk onderzoek gedurende drie expedities naar het Princess Elisabeth Station, de nieuwe Belgische Onderzoekstation, in 2009, 2010, 2011 en 2012. De expedities werden door de Federal Science Policy Office gefinancieerd voor het projekt BELDIVA. De logistieke ondersteuning wordt door de International Polar Foundation verzekerd. Gidsen van het Belgische leger hebben ons ook in het veld vergezeld, net zoals de fotograaf René Robert.
Bovendien, in 2013, kon één van ons deelnemen aan een expeditie van INACH (Chili).
Wie zijn we? Wetenschappers, meestal van Belgische universiteiten en instituten, en onze internationale kollega’s die hun complementaire expertise aanbieden. We werken samen, en een karakteristiek van Antarctische onderzoek is juist het hoog niveau van internationale samenwerking, zoals door de Antarctic Treaty gevraagd wordt (http://www.ats.aq/index_e.htm).
Omdat onze teams multitalig zijn, zal de blog teksten in verschillende talen bevatten (nu Engels, Nederlands, Frans, en misschien meer in de toekomst…). U kunt vertalen met Google. Wij hopen dat jullie geinteresseerd zullen zijn ! Aarzel niet om kommentaren en vragen te schrijven...

Ce blog concerne notre recherche scientifique lors de trois expéditions à la Station Princess Elisabeth, la nouvelle station de recherche Belge, en 2009, 2010, 2011 et 2012. Les expéditions sont financées par le 'Federal Science Policy Office' pour le projet BELDIVA. Le soutien logistique à la Station est assuré par la Fondation Polaire Internationale. Sur le terrain, nous avons été accompagnés par des guides de l’Armée Belge, ainsi que le photographe René Robert. De plus, en 2013, l'un de nous a pu participer à l'expédition organisée par l'INACH (Chili).
Qui sommes-nous ? Des scientifiques, surtout des universités et instituts belges, et nos collègues internationaux qui proposent leurs expertises complémentaires. Nous collaborons et une des caractéristiques de la recherche en Antarctique est son haut niveau de coopération internationale, comme requis par le Traité Antarctique (http://www.ats.aq/index_f.htm).
Etant donné que nos équipes sont multilingues, le blog contiendra aussi des textes dans différents languages (actuellement anglais, néerlandais, français, et peut-être d’autres dans le futur…).
